Top of a concrete staircase outside an American high school. Golden afternoon light, long shadows. A girl in a wheelchair is frozen at the edge of the top step. A tall boy in a letterman jacket stands directly behind her, blocking the only way back. He leans down over her shoulder from behind, his face next to her ear, smirking. He whispers: "Go ahead. Take the stairs." She grips the wheels tight, knuckles white. She doesn't move. He straightens up behind her and slowly places one hand on the back of her chair. Her eyes go wide. His fingers tighten on the handle. Hold on her face — pure terror. Below, a row of students watches with phones raised. Nobody moves. Slow push-in on his hand gripping the chair.
