In a snow-choked upstate New York forest at dusk, blue-gray light fading fast through bare trees, Daniel (9, white American boy in an oversized army-surplus parka, taped-up boots, cheeks red from cold) steps into a hollow and freezes at the sight of a white American man in his early 40s wearing a black suit, bound tightly to an oak with thick yellow rope and duct tape over his mouth, blindfolded and shivering violently.
