Panic rose fast and sharp. The neighborhood joined the search. Mrs. Alvarez checked her garden shed. Mr. Thompson looked under porches. Sam ran through the park, calling Zak’s name until his throat felt tight and sore. As the sun dipped low, Sam sat on the curb, trying not to cry. The world felt too quiet without the steady tap of paws beside him. Then he heard it. A faint whine. Sam lifted his head. It came again—from across the street, near the old construction lot. He sprinted toward the sound and found Zak stuck behind a stack of wooden pallets, his leash snagged on a nail. His tail thumped wildly the moment he saw Sam. “You scared me,” Sam whispered, kneeling down to untangle him. Zak licked his face as if to say, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to go far. Sam hugged him tightly, breathing in the familiar smell of grass and sunshine. The world felt right again.
