Jake, a 14-year-old boy, goes hiking with his family in the Colorado mountains. Dense fog, cold air, pine trees everywhere. His parents are setting up the tent near a clearing. Jake says: "I'm gonna explore a bit" - walks into the forest. He's walking between the trees. Sound of birds, smell of wet earth and moss. Suddenly his foot slips on wet leaves - steep slope - he falls down. About 15 feet. His head hits a rock. Everything goes blurry. When he opens his eyes, it's dark. He's inside a small cave. His body aches everywhere. His phone fell somewhere above - no signal anyway. He shouts: "Dad! Mom!" Nobody answers. He tries to climb up. The cave wall is slippery, covered in moss. His hand touches something hard - a bone. A skull - maybe a deer or coyote. He realizes this cave is a trap. Animals fell here too. They died here. It's 3 PM. Sun is setting. If night comes, the temperature will drop to freezing - he might die from hypothermia. He grabs a sharp rock, starts scraping the wall - trying to carve small footholds. His fingers are bleeding. He's sweating even though it's cold. One hour passes. He's only climbed up 8 inches. He sits down. Exhausted. Looks at the animal bones around him - deer, raccoon, maybe a fox. They all gave up. They all died waiting. He thinks: "I'm not gonna be another skeleton in this hole." Stands up again. This time he doesn't try to climb. He starts throwing rocks up - one by one - trying to hit the trees above to make noise. His arm is tired. He keeps throwing. After 30 rocks, nothing. Then he remembers - his jacket is bright orange (hunting safety color). He ties it to a long stick from the cave floor, pushes it up through the opening as high as he can. A tiny orange flag sticking out. 20 minutes later - barking. A dog. The orange caught someone's attention. A man appears above, throws down a rope. They pull Jake up. Two weeks later, Jake goes back to that cave with the forest rangers. They put a metal fence over it and a warning sign: "DANGER - HIDDEN DROP" Jake puts a small wooden cross next to it - for all the animals that weren't as lucky as him. The lesson: When you're trapped, you have two choices - give up like those bones, or keep trying something different until something works. Panic kills faster than the trap itself.
