A shelter worker quietly says, “They adopted you.” There is a pause. The dog slowly raises his head and fixes his eyes on the woman. Nothing else matters to him. He tries to walk toward her. His front legs wobble. He takes a few steps, stops, breathes hard, then tries again. A soft, strained sound comes from his throat. The woman drops down to her knees without speaking and opens her arms. Still coming from straight ahead, the dog reaches her with visible effort and leans his thin body into her.
