Exterior, a rain-drenched American riverbank at night. Heavy downpour, near-total darkness broken only by distant highway lights reflecting off the swollen river surface. A black SUV is half-submerged in the rushing current, sinking slowly, headlights flickering underwater. A white American man in his early fifties, wearing a torn dress shirt, presses his palms desperately against the inside of the rear window, mouth open in a silent scream, water rising past his chin. On the muddy bank, a thin white American girl, around thirteen, soaked through in oversized clothes, grips an enormous jagged rock with both hands. She charges toward the vehicle through knee-deep water, rain hammering her face. She raises the rock above her head and brings it down hard against the window corner. A spiderweb crack explodes across the glass. She shouts through the storm, "Hold on!" The man inside pounds the cracking glass from within. She strikes again. The window shatters inward. She drops the rock, reaches through the broken window, and grabs his arm. She plants her feet in the mud and pulls hard. The man struggles through the opening, coughing water, collapsing halfway out. She grips his shoulders and drags him free of the sinking vehicle onto the muddy bank. Both fall to the ground, gasping. She sits up, catches her breath, looks at the sinking SUV, then back at him.
