In a snow-choked upstate New York forest at dusk, blue-gray light fading fast through bare trees, Daniel (9, white American boy in an oversized army-surplus parka, taped-up boots, cheeks red from cold) steps into a hollow and freezes at the sight of a white American man in his early 40s wearing a black suit, bound tightly to an oak with thick yellow rope and duct tape over his mouth, blindfolded and shivering violently. The camera starts in a wide shot revealing the man tied to the tree, then pushes into a close-up on Daniel’s trembling hands gripping a small folding knife, then cuts to a tight close-up of the man’s sharp eyes as Daniel rips the tape away. The man gasps and rasps, “Cut me loose, kid,” and Daniel whispers, “If I do… you won’t hurt me?” Both bodies stay tense and rigid in the biting wind, breath visible, snow crunching underfoot; the moment hangs with raw fear and urgency.
