The room is dim, lit only by the pale glow of a television screen and a flickering lamp in the corner. Dust floats in the air like frozen ash. Three young adults sit on a worn-out couch, their faces half-lit, half-swallowed by shadow. One of them slides an old VHS tape into the player. The machine whirs. Click. Static. The screen trembles, then clears. A clown appears. Not colorful. Not playful. His makeup is cracked and uneven, white paint peeling like dead skin. His red smile is smeared too wide, as if carved rather than painted. His eyes—dark, wet, and unblinking—stare directly into the camera. Directly at them. For a moment, silence. Then one of the friends laughs. A short laugh. Nervous. Forced. Another joins in, louder this time. “Is that it?” “Looks fake.” They all laugh now, mocking, relaxed. One even leans back, shaking his head, amused. On the screen, the clown’s expression changes. Very slowly, the smile fades. The corners of his mouth sink, trembling. His eyes glisten, filling with something heavy—anger… or hurt. The room temperature seems to drop. The laughter dies out, one by one, as if cut off by an invisible hand. The clown lowers his head. When he looks back up, his face is no longer sad. It is empty. The static grows louder. The screen flickers violently. The clown moves closer to the camera—too close—his face distorting, stretching unnaturally. A low sound creeps in, like breathing through a broken throat. Behind the couch, the VHS player stops. Click. The TV goes black. In the reflection of the screen, the three friends see something standing behind them— a pale shape, smiling far too wide. Cut to black. Silence.
