The world felt too quiet without the steady tap of paws beside him. Then he heard it. A faint whine. Sam lifted his head. It came again—from across the street, near the old construction lot. He sprinted toward the sound and found Benny stuck behind a stack of wooden pallets, his leash snagged on a nail. His tail thumped wildly the moment he saw Sam. “You scared me,” Sam whispered, kneeling down to untangle him. Benny licked his face as if to say, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to go far. Sam hugged him tightly, breathing in the familiar smell of grass and sunshine. The world felt right again.
